The latest episode of The 2000AD Thrill-Cast is here, and it’s a doozy.
Kids raised in the UK in the 70’s and 80’s and comic fans around the world know just how important both Star Wars and 2000AD were to sci-fi and fantasy fans of the time. The sonic boom of Star Wars pushed kids to magazines like 2000AD in a time when Marvel was struggling, and DC was suffering the after-effects of the DC Implosion in the summer of 1978.
Launched in February 1977, 2000AD arrived on shelves every Monday and over the past 40 years has given the world of comics a veritable hall of fame of comics talent – Dan Abnett, Simon Bisley, Brian Bolland, Alan Davis, Steve Dillon, Garth Ennis, Carlos Ezquerra, Neil Gaiman, Ian Gibson, Alan Grant, John Higgins, Cam Kennedy, Alan Moore, Kevin O’Neill, John Wagner and Kev Walker to name but a few.
Jock and Chris Weston are two more 2000AD legends, and worked in the costume and character design department on The Last Jedi. The 2000AD Thrill-Cast took the chance to chat with them about their work on the film and the influence 2000AD has had on their work.
Millions of people around the world have watched Rey, Finn, Poe, Luke and Leia fighting The First Order in Star Wars: The Last Jedi – though they probably won’t realise they were seeing costumes and characters designed by two of 2000 AD‘s finest.
Chris Weston (Judge Dredd, Indigo Prime) and Jock (Dredd, Lenny Zero) are two of 2000 AD‘s most popular art droids and worked for nine months on costumes and characters for the latest installment of Star Wars, from the caretaker Lanai on Ahch-To to Leia’s cloak on Crait, from the police on Canto Bight to the Resistance’s pilot helmets.
As The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast celebrates its third birthday, the official 2000 AD podcast talks to Jock and Chris about their work for Lucasfilm on the highest-grossing film of 2017, the influence of 2000 AD on their designs, what skills comics have given them, and the challenges of adapting to a very different work environment.
